I believe this is a medieval English variant of Amy that died out in the ensuing centuries, because this is the spelling usually given to Amie Gaveston, only surviving daughter of notorious English courtier and royal favorite Piers Gaveston, Earl of Cornwall (1284 – 1312).
I've been using it as a nickname for Amelia.
This name when used as a word in French means female friend.
