It looks like it comes from the Latin word amicus, which means friend.

I'm pretty sure it means "friend" in Esperanto, not "friendly."

"Amika" means friendly, "Amiko" would mean friend. In Esperanto, words that end in -o are nouns, words that end in -a are adjectives. :)
