The names "Bassem" and "Bassam" are completely different names. They're not just transcription variants. It's true that they both mean smiling, but "Bassam" is smiling in excess. They are also spelled differently in Arabic. "Bassem" is spelled "باسم" while "Bassam" is spelled "بسّام". I am a native Arabic speaker from Lebanon, and as a carrier of the name "Bassem", it bothers me that they are categorized as the same name. [noted -ed]
