Benjamin might also just mean "son of J/Yamin".
Benjamin, a good person, who was the youngest brother of Joseph. I have a "kind" grandson named Benjamin, and many people have told him that from older people than him and his peers. His Bar Mitzvah was in November of 2015. He is very proud of his religion.
In the Bible, Benjamin was the youngest son of Jacob and Rachel. The name either means "The Chosen One," or "The Favorite Son". (Most likely The Chosen One).
From the Hebrew name Binyamin. It is composed of two words "Bin" which means "Son" and "Yamin" which "right hand side". In Hebrew right hand side symbolizes strength. Therefore the true meaning is "son of strength". The meaning "son of south" isn’t correct. There is no reference in Hebrew for "yamin" to mean south.
The word yamin does indeed refer to both "right" and "south". South is the direction of the right hand when facing East.
The name Benjamin is from the Arabic "ibn amin" meaning son of, or favored son of the father.
To correct a comment above - Benjamin is a Hebrew name from "Ben Yamin" (son of right (strength)) and is in no way a derivative of the Arabic "ibn amin". Arabic is a related language to Hebrew, so it's not surprising that the Arabic name is somewhat similar to the original Hebrew. But Benjamin was a Hebrew/Jewish name no less than 1,700 years before Mohammed and the advent of Islam. It made it into the Christian world long before Arabs adopted their own version of the name.
