Derivative from "Brigid" the pagan Irish goddess of fire, healing, arts and midwifery. A very important female name in Celtic and Christian religion as "Bridie" is said to have brought Christianity to Ireland. The story goes she and her father who was the King of Ireland were put to sea to drown. They didn't but made it to an island where some druid priests agreed to take them in. One day Bridie was walking and she was near this place that was said to be the gateway to heaven. She was met by Mary in a blue cloak and then travelled through the stars to be the "handmaiden" of baby Jesus in the stable in Bethlehem. She returned then informed the Druid priests of what had happened who viewed it as the sign they had been waiting for.
