Encountered this name on my family tree, given to a boy in 1850.
This name is also masculine in rare instances, a famous bearer being the Puritan, Comfort Starr.
Comfort was a fairly ordinary name in England pre-1900s, along with all the other 'virtue' names like Faith and Mercy. It seems to have been quite popular in Jamaica more recently: I've met several Jamaican Comforts.
