"What do you call a woman with one leg shorter than the other? Eileen (I lean). I live in the United States and I pronounce my name as EI leen. I don't remember anyone ever pronouncing it ei LEEN. I often correct people who read it as Elaine or Ellen. I often have to correct the spelling of people who confuse it with Ilene or Ileen, especially in the West. When I lived in the East, I knew more people who spelled it like I do.
It has Lee, in it the male spelling of Leigh/Lee. Its pronounced Eye-Leen, Mispronunciations include Ey-leen, Ey-laine, and Elle-Leen.
My Gaelic-speaking uncle from Mull pronounced my name between EYE-len and AY-len, which perhaps explains the spelling Aileen. North Americans put the stress on the second syllable for some reason.
("eilean" means a small island as in Eilean Donan).
In Ireland it's pronounced IE-leen, with the stress on the first syllable. [noted -ed]
Eileen is pronounced ei-leen. Aileen is pronounced ay-leen.
