Usages: Greek Mythology (Latinized), Italian (Rare)
Meaning: Latinized form of Galateia, meaning "she who is milk-white", from Greek γάλα (gala) meaning "milk", though it is sometimes interpreted as meaning "calm goddess" from Greek γαλήνη (galene) meaning "stillness of the sea, calm" and θεά (thea) meaning "goddess". This was the name of several characters in Greek mythology including a sea nymph, the daughter of Doris and Nereus.
Galatea is the usual form in English so the meaning and origin should stay on this site as well and not just be under Galateia.
Galatea and Galateia are both used in English (interchangeably in many cases) which is why the daughter of Doris is sometimes listed as Galatea and sometimes as Galateia.
