Queen Elizabeth I was often referred to as Gloriana. She was also called the Virgin Queen. Don't blame me, I'm doing on project on her for school. xD

The 16th century English poet Edmund Spenser gave this name to a character representing Queen Elizabeth I in the poem 'The Faerie Queen' and it became a popular name for her. After the defeat of the Spanish Armada the troops greeted Queen Elizabeth I with cries of Gloriana, Gloriana, Gloriana!
