I like how this sounds, but I would never actually use this name, ever. The "God" part is unappealing and should only be used biblically.

I think it’s best as a middle name. However I do find the meaning quite interesting.

Nice and dignified, but even an irreverent person can pull off this name. For those concerned that a name is too old fashioned, there's always Jadyn.

I think the first syllable, "God", would make this a quite heavy cross for any boy to bear.

I don't care if names seem old-fashioned since it's a silly attribution if it's the main reason it stops you from choosing the name. Old-fashioned names have lots of cool history behind them and are generally respectable names.
Okay, maybe a lot of people like to stereotype Godfrey's perhaps always acting "stuck-up"- I don't think blaming and taking it out on the name is completely appropriate, it's the stuck-up person you've met who you really dislike, isn't it? Then again, it's different for everyone, you might have genuinely hated the name for some other reason before meeting someone called this, then I might understand (like how I've always hated the name Bethany, long before I met a horrible person with the name Bethany). If you haven't met a person but you judge a name ONLY for sounding posh and hate it JUST for that reason, isn't that showing a slight prejudice side in you? There are surely nice posh people out there.
God jokes are quite unoriginal and are a little too obvious, you'd hardly have to think much to create them.
I think the meaning of the charming name Godfrey is wonderful though using "God" as a nickname for a person (well, to be honest, for anyone/anything) is personally something I am totally against... either say it whole or have "Frey" as a suitable nickname (if a nickname is necessary). :)

It's not that I dislike the sound, but I don't know if I could ever give my son a name that started with "God." You know?

Hopelessly old-fashioned, and also quite pompous and stuck up-sounding. The nickname God would be funny, though!
