I believe this name origin is Germanic and should be linked to Gunther or Gunnar. It's meaning is "soldier ready for war".
Dithematic names do occur which combine Germanic elements with words from other languages, especially in Spain and North Africa, so a combination of Germanic Gunthe and Latin Salvus is plausible, without looking for an unrecognizable Germanic root. [noted -ed]
I believe that this name actually means "War Savior" since 'gund' means war and 'salvus' means savior. :)
Salvus means safe, unhurt, well, all right.
