Comments (Meaning / History Only)

Hi! I'm from a Gypsy family. I’ve seen many comments saying ‘It’s a slur. Period’ etc, that can be offensive to us alone. In many areas of the world we are proud calling ourselves Gypsies. This is because we are aware of the trials and struggles we have been through, my family especially. Within my family and others around us it's a name that represents strength, survival, and pride. We have made names for ourselves in the towns we live and move to and show the local communities that we are nice people that will help if we can and show some support when we can. Because we know what it is like. My grandfather especially he built up a career and home showing despite of the ignorant beliefs of the name (like some of you have, to be honest) he was an amazing man with good morals and a good heart. Everyone knew he was a Gypsy as he was proud of it and would talk about his upbringing. Everyone in our town loved him and still to this day they know and respect the word Gypsy as a word of honour and strength. And I still uphold it today, as does my family and friends within the Gypsy community. Many things have been taken from us throughout the years. Please don’t take our name too out of narrow mindedness.
As I agree to not choose the name out of it sounding cute, but please educate yourself on the history of the name and how we use it now. And lastly, people who still use it as a hateful slur are the ones who have the mindset like many others on here that it's a horrible word that only brings misfortune. Some gypsies don’t use it. I can respect that and understand it. But the majority do use it and still trying to show the strength to it. You are not helping by taking it away from us.
Thank you.
Gypsy "Wandering Flower". Gypsy is a beautiful name. It has been my nickname for years. I am Caucasian and I love the name. Don't let a few racists ruin this beautiful name.
The Gypsy or Romany people also came from Iran, not only northern India. Gypsies were persecuted during the third reich on the orders of Adolf Hitler along with people of the Jewish faith. Ironically enough, the Gypsie people who were from Northern India and Iran were "Aryan People". The Aryan race is what Hitler wanted. Aryan's were/are not from Germany but the most noble race is from Iran and Northern India aka the original land of Gypsies who were killed by Hitler. Did he get his facts wrong or what?
