The famous bearers that are mentioned: Hugh Capet, and the Kings of Jerusalem and Cyprus were actually spelled by them as Hughett and Hughet. The French Huguenots knew the king Capet with a ett on the end of the name. If you read the book "Templar of Trye" which was written in Latin at the time the Hughs were in power in Jerusalem they spelled their names as Hughet. Hugh is just a short pronunciation of Hughett.
