My name is Kate and my name means pure/clear and is a very popular Irish name and it also is a Latin name. The name was also a name from a person that played in a Shakespear's comedy "Taming of the Shrew."
Recently, this name has been used as a short form of Kaitlin or Kaitlyn.
In Shakespeare's day, "Kate" was an informal way of saying "cake." In 'The Taming of the Shrew,' Petruchio plays on this briefly with his lines.
This name is also used in Croatia as a diminutive of Katarina (kah-tah-REE-nah). It's pronounced KAH-teh. It's not only an English name! [noted -ed]
Kate can be a nickname of the Greek name (my name) Aikaterine.
Kate is also a derivation from the Gaelic/Erse word and name Ceith, which means "pure". It was a name possible for males and females which divided into Kate (f) and Cade (m).
