Lewis is also the name of a Scottish isle in the Outer Hebrides (which might explain its popularity in Scotland). The Isle of Lewis is part of Lewis and Harris (one of the largest populated islands) and is quite apart from Scotland as it retains a lot of traditional Scottish culture and history in its everyday. (The Lewis chessmen were discovered on this island.)The name of Lewis as an island is thought to be Norse or Gaelic, probably meaning "marsh".
