The actual (or at least variant) German pronunciation is MUH-yuh /'ma:ja:/. There’s a popular cartoon series “Biene Maja” based on the children books by Waldemar Bonsels, translated into English as “Maya the Bee”. The German theme song interpreted by Karel Gott is also very well known and uses the aforementioned pronunciation (with a Czech accent).

It is pronounced like Maya, the J is soft. Can also be a nickname for Maj-Britt and other Maj-.... names.
