I actually know a middle-aged woman named Mario. Anyway, I always thought this name sounded fun.
Also a boys name in Croatia. Rarely spelled Marijo (mostly those born some decades ago).
In Italy the golden era of Mario was the first half of the 20th century: it was the 2nd most popular name in Rome in 1901 behind Umberto, the most popular in 1906, 1911, 1916, 1921, 1926 and 1931, the 2nd most popular in 1936 behind Franco, the 3rd in 1941 behind Franco and Roberto, the 4th in 1946 behind Roberto, Franco and Giuseppe. In other parts of Italy it was usually less used than more traditional names like Giuseppe or Giovanni.
Though in other lands Mario is often regarded as one of the most typical Italian names, it was hardly ever used before the 20th century, and it has become rather old-fashioned today.
Also used in Slovenia.
