I read that Melusine is derived from the Middle Breton mel (honey) so it means 'Honeyed One'. The story of Melusine is a Breton fairy tale, so that would make sense. It would also mean that Melusine is related to the name Melissa (honey bee in Greek).
Mélusine is the contraction of "mère Lusigne" ("mother Lusigne"). Lusigne comes from Lusignan, the name of an aritocratic family from Poitou (where the legend comes from). For those who speak French: http://www.bienvenue-vendee.com/savoir/melusine.cfm
Maybe this is related to Millicent?
According to a (fictitous) book I once read by this title, Melusine was a descendant of the snake that tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden. She was said to have the ability to change into a snake during the night time.
