She was born Judith Schwartz but adopted "Pepper" as a teenager to differentiate herself from two other girls called Judith Schwartz in her high school. Used by a character in Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's book (later TV show) Good Omens. In her case, it is short for Pippin Galadriel Moonchild.
