Born in Alton, Illinois, Robert Wadlow (1918-1940) was (and remains) the tallest human being ever recorded, standing at 8'11. His extraordinary height was caused by hypertrophy of the pituitary gland, and an autoimmune disease tragically stole his life at the young age of 22. Despite the physical challenges Mr. Wadlow faced throughout his life, he was adored for his positivity, friendliness, and gentleness, earning him the nickname, “Gentle Giant”. His legacy continues to be honored and celebrated today.
