In Australia, where Tayla used to be common, Taylor and Tayla would be pronounced exactly the same. So I think it simply became popular as an alternate spelling of Taylor in Australia at least.
It should be pointed out that in Australia and most of England, where the accent is "non-rhotic", Tayla and Taylor have identical pronunciations.
Yes, in the vast majority of British accents, Tayla and Taylor sound exactly the same.
