Titty is the name of a character from the fairy tale The Enchanted Canary. She is a gypsy who attempts to take the place of the princess Zizi by turning her into a canary so she can steal Zizi's love interest Desire.
Arthur Ransome named his fictional Walker children in the series, "Swallows and Amazons", after a Syrian family who shared his love of sailing and lived near his home on Coniston Water, UK. The real family consisted of Taqui, Susan (always called Susie), Mavis (called Titty after a favorite folk tale, "Titty Mouse and Tatty Mouse"), Roger and Bridget Altounyan. In the fictional Walker family, Ransome had his eldest be a boy, balancing the genders, John, followed by Susan, Titty, Roger & Bridget.
Titty Walker from the "Swallows and Amazons" series was named after a real person called Titty Altounyan. Her real name was Mavis, which is an old country word for a song thrush.Small birds were (in more innocent times) called "Titty birds" to children; presumably in the sense of "itty-Titty" or tiny.So her nickname was just in the sense of a small bird, and was a play on her real name.I just thought I'd clear that up because a lot of people seem to think her name was Letitia or she was named after Scottish slang.
I read somewhere that 'Titty' was the Italian name for Tweety Bird. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Also, what a horrid name for a person!
This name is probably best known for its use in the Swallows and Amazons books by Arthur Ransome. Able Seaman Titty was one of the main characters in the Swallows crew who is supposed to have written the stories Missy Lee and Peter Duck.
