This spelling for females was popularised by the British poet laureate Lord Tennyson. I knew three girls named Vivien during my English childhood, another one named Vivienne, and a boy called Vivian. He and one of the girls called Vivien were in my primary school class, which also boasted a Verity and a Veronica (Vivien's best friend).
I think Vivien is perfection - ultra-beautiful and not too fancy.
