Meaning & History

Diminutive of Frid or Frido, which are both a short form of masculine names that contain the Germanic element frid or fridu meaning "peace", such as Friedrich and Gottfried. Also compare Friedl and names that contain the High German diminutive suffix -lin, such as Landolin and Wendelin.

The best known bearer of this name is probably the 6th-century missionary and saint Fridolin of Säckingen (died around 538 AD). However, it is important to note that the saint is believed to have been born in Ireland, which means that in his case, his name is either a germanification of his original Irish name, or a legitimate Germanic name (with the etymology that was just described above) that was bestowed upon him by the Alamanns, the local Germanic tribe that he worked amongst in Säckingen.

Other bearers of the name include the German painter Fridolin Leiber (1853-1912), the Swiss politician Fridolin Anderwert (1828-1880) and the German palaeontologist and geologist Fridolin von Sandberger (1826-1898).
