Meaning & History

Probably a variant of HELEWISE. It occurs in Thomas Malory's 15th-century compilation of Arthurian legends 'Le Morte d'Arthur' belonging to a sorceress who creates the chapel perilous, the setting of one of the quests of Sir Lancelot, and falls in love with the knight. She dies from sorrow a few weeks after he rejects her.
