Meaning & History

Means "flower of the lily", from Italian #fiore di giglio#, loan-translation of French #fleur de lys#. It was used by the poets Boiardo and Ariosto in their 'Orlando' poems (1495 and 1532), where it belongs to the wife of Brandimarte. It was subsequently used for a character in Mozart's opera 'Così fan tutte' (1790).
