Theories include a derivation from Basque atsegin "pleasure, delight, bliss; pleasant, nice; amicable; pleased, happy, delightful; supportive, helpful, kind" and a derivation from hats egin "to breathe, to take a breath". It is occasionally considered a Basque equivalent of Consuelo.
