Meaning & History

Latinized form of ALEXIKAKOS.

This was an epithet of the Greek hero HERAKLES. It was also applied to several Greek gods, such as ZEUS, HERMES and APOLLO. The latter was worshipped in Athens as Apollo Alexicacus, because as the god of (among others) disease and medicine, he had been credited with stopping the disastrous Plague of Athens (5th century BC).
