Meaning & History

The origins of this name are uncertain; probably a Latinized form of a Celtic name, although some Latin roots have been suggested (including aes, genitive aeris, "brass, copper, bronze, money, wealth"; and era, genitive erae, "mistress of a house"). This was the name of a Romano-Celtic chthonic underworld goddess, described by archaeologist MIRANDA Aldhouse-Green as a Gaulish HECUBA.
