May mean "master god". From the Aramaic hu meaning 'spirit, god', and Ba'al 'master, lord'.He was a god of divination, rain, and war worshipped in pre-Islamic Arabia, notably at the Kaaba in Mecca. He possibly originated somewhere in Moab, Mesopotamia, or Petra. Much about his character as a god is unclear.
