Meaning & History

Latinized form of the ancient Greek given name Ἀρριδαῖoς (Arrhidaios), which might possibly be a variant form of the Greek given name Ἀρραβαῖος (Arrhabaios) (see ARRHABAEUS). However, it's also possible that this is a name on its own, in which case the first element may possibly consist of the Greek prefix ar meaning "not, without" (similar to the word arrhythmia). The second element might then possibly be related to Ionic Greek rheidios meaning "easy, ready" (compare Attic Greek rhadios "easy, ready"), which is strenghtened by the fact that the spellings Arrhaidaios and Arrheidaios exist. Known bearers of this name include king Philip III Arrhidaeus of Macedon (4th century BC) and one of Alexander the Great's generals (4th century BC).
