Meaning & History

Derived from the Greek noun φάος (phaos) meaning "light", which is ultimately derived from the Greek verb φαίνω (phaino) meaning "to shine" as well as "to show, to appear". Also compare the related names PHAEDRA and PASIPHAË.

Phaidon of Elis (better known as Phaedo) was a 4th-century BC philosopher and a friend and student of Socrates. He was present for the last hours of Socrates' life. Plato's book Phaidon (better known by its latinized form Phaedo) is named after Phaidon of Elis.
