Meaning & History

This name can be used as 霜 (sou, shimo) meaning "frost."
It can also be used to combine 次 (shi, ji, tsugi, tsu.gu) meaning "next, order, sequence" with 茂 (mo, shige.ru) meaning "be luxuriant, grow thick, overgrown" or 志 (shi, kokorozashi, kokoroza.su, shiringu) meaning "aspire, hopes, intention, motive, plan, resolve, shilling" with the phonetic character も (mo).

Shimo was used in the Edo Period (1603-1868) and though it was, at first, slightly uncommon, it became slightly common to common in the latter part of that period. It did slightly wane in popularity in the first half of the Meiji Period (1868-1912) but it was still (moderately) popular at that time before it dropped in popularity in the 1900s.
