Meaning & History

This name is used as 半平太 with 半 (han, naka.ba) meaning "half, middle, odd number, part-, semi-," 平 (hyou, byou, hei) meaning "plain, flat, even, level" and 太 (ta, tai, futo.i, futo.ru) meaning "big, plump, thick."

One bearer of this name was Bakumatsu period samurai and leader of the Tosa Loyalist Party Hanpeita Takechi/Takechi Hanpeita (武市 半平太), also known as Zuizan Takechi/Takechi Zuizan (武市 瑞山) (1829–1865).
One fictional bearer of this name is the character Hanpeita Tsukigata/Tsukigata Hanpeita (月形 半平太), who appeared in several films and TV dramas about himself. He may have been modeled on Takechi, Senzō Tsukigata/Tsukigata Senzō (月形 洗蔵) and Ryōma Sakamoto/Sakamoto Ryōma (坂本 龍馬).

This name was used in the Edo Period (1603-1868) but, judging from the amount of evidence there is at the moment, it was rarely used on men in general.
