Meaning & History

The first element of this name is usually derived from Old High German wîg meaning "warrior" or "war, battle", but there are also certainly cases where it is derived from Old High German wîh meaning "holy". After all, Ernst Förstemann mentions in his book "Altdeutsches Namenbuch" that it is extremely hard to separate the elements wîg and wîh from each other, when they are used as the first element in given names. The second element of this name is derived from Old High German ric meaning "powerful, strong, mighty."

Known bearers of this name include the medieval German diplomat and military commander Wirich V von Daun-Falkenstein (c. 1473-1546) and his great-great-grandson, the German count Wilhelm Wirich von Daun-Falkenstein (1613-1682).
