Meaning & History

Elaboration of Eyja using an uncertain element, possibly Old Norse lín meaning "flax, linen; linen garment, linen gear" or Hlín (both the Old Norse word for "protection" and a poetic term for "woman"). This was used by the Icelandic author Kristmann Guðmundsson for a character in his novel Ströndin blá, originally published in Norwegian as Den blå kyst (1931; and spelled Eialin in Norwegian).
