Meaning & History

From Japanese (ka) "beautiful, good" and (ya) "area, field" combined with (ko) "child". This is merely one popular combination; many other kanji combinations are possible.

This name is notably borne by the fictional antagonist of the Japanese horror franchise "Ju-On" (also known and adapted as "The Grudge" in Western countries). The character's name is spelled with the kanji (ka) "attendant, nurse" and (ya) "palm tree; coconut; coconut palm" combined with (ko) "child".
(See also Sadako, the name borne by the fictional antagonist of the Japanese horror franchise "Ringu", also known and adapted as "The Ring" in the West. Indeed, these two characters - Kayako and Sadako - eventually became so popular that they starred in a crossover film together: 2016's "Sadako vs. Kayako".)

The name, regardless of kanji, is written as かやこ (Kayako) in hiragana and as カヤコ (Kayako) in katakana.
