Meaning & History

This name can be used as 円 (en, mado, mado.ka, maru, maru.i, maro.yaka, tsubura) meaning "circle, round" or it can be combined with 良 (ryou, i.i, yo.i, ra) meaning "good." As a word, it (円ら) refers to something round and cute, especially the eyes.

It was first recorded in the Kofun period (250–538), belonging to Katsuragi no Tsubura (葛城円), whose daughter was one of Emperor Yūryaku's wifes. In the Nara period (710–794), it was recorded as a female name, suffixed by -me (売), with phonetic kanji including 都夫良, 都布良 and 豆布良 (都 (tsu, to, miyako) meaning "capital," 夫 (fu, fuu, bu, otto, sore, o) meaning "husband, man," 布 (fu, nuno) meaning "cloth" and 豆 (zu, tou, mame, mame-) meaning "(soy)bean").
The name decreased in usage after this period and it wasn't revived until the 20th century. Even so, the usage at this moment in time is rare.
