Meaning & History

Latinized form of NIKESIPOLIS. A notable bearer of this name was Nicesipolis of Pherae (4th century BC). She was a Thessalian woman, who became a wife or concubine of king Philip II of Macedon. She died in circa 345 BC, twenty days after giving birth to their daughter Thessalonike of Macedon. Nicesipolis was likely of noble Thessalian origin and may have been a niece of Jason of Pherae.
