Meaning & History

This was a word for the narcissus flower used in Crete. It is said to mean "unwalled" in Greek, possibly from the Greek negative prefix α (a) with an element related to ἀκή (ake) "point, edge". In Greek mythology this name was borne by a Cretan princess, the daughter of Minos, who was loved by the god Apollo and bore him sons: Miletus, Amphithemis and Garamas. This character was called Ἀκάλλη (Akalle) by Apollodorus, a name likely derived from Greek ἀκαλλής (akalles) meaning "without charms".
