Meaning & History

From a combination of the characters 玉 (yu, meaning “jade”) and 帝 (di, meaning “emperor”). In Daoist mythology, Yudi is the supreme ruler of the cosmos who has authority over heaven, earth and hell. He rules with the help of an extensive divine bureaucracy that is headquartered in the sky but extends its jurisdiction to all parts of the natural world. He is most well-known from his appearance in the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, where he is forced to deal with the increasingly rebellious Monkey King Sun Wukong.

He is also known as Yu-huang (玉皇) and Yu-huang Dadi (玉皇大帝).
