From Indonesian batara meaning "god, deity", ultimately from Sanskrit भट्टार (bhattara), and guru meaning "teacher", ultimately from Sanskrit गुरु (guru). In many Indonesian cultures he is a supreme deity who is considered a form of the Hindu god Shiva.
