The name is said to mean "strong bull" in Persian, which seems possible indeed, since the modern Persian word for the animal is گاو (gav).Also compare the similar Persian name Gōdarz (see Gotarzes), which is at least partially related. The Georgian form of that name is გოტარზ (Gotarz).A notable bearer of this name is the Georgian author and film director Goderdzi Chokheli (1954-2007).
