Meaning & History

Derived from the Greek adjective ἄσκαλος (askalos) meaning "unhoed, uncultivated" and therefore "rough" in a figurative sense.

This name is not to be confused with Ἀσκάλων (Askalon), the Greek name for the coastal city of Ashkelon in what is now Israel.

Askalon was the name of an obscure martyr and saint from the 3rd century AD, whose feast day is on 20 May (Old Style) and 2 June (New Style).
