Meaning & History

Means "woman from Lesbos" in Latin, Lesbos being a Greek island in the northeastern Aegean Sea which was home to a circle of young girl lovers including SAPPHO. This name was used by Latin poet Catullus as a pseudonym for the woman he loved, who is commonly identified as Clodia Metelli. It also occurs in the German romance 'Wigamur' (1240–60; about an Arthurian knight), belonging to a cave woman who abducts and rears the infant title character.
