Meaning & History

The girl's name Anysia derives from the ancient Greek word "ánisos", which means "unique", "unmatched".

Saint Anysia was a Martyr of Greece. She was a rich woman from Salonika in Thessaly who used her personal funds to help the poor. A soldier accosted her in the street and tried to drag her to a pagan sacrifice. She resisted and was killed when the soldier attacked her with his sword. But, in 298 AD she was killed because she did not give in to the pressure to give up her belief in God.
