I think Mary should choose her own nickname, if she's the one to be called it. Maybe she would like a name that doesn't even dervive from a name, or she would like to go by her middle name.

My gggg grandma's name was Mary Mccarty but she always went by Polly. She was Irish. I also knew a girl named Mary who went by Sholly who was also of Irish ancestry. I think Mimi is adorable for a nn for Mary!!

I usually call my friend Mary, Marie or Maria (said with a slight accent), we also call her Mare-Bear. I also know a Mary that only goes by Molly.
