Do you think the surname RIPPETOE is French?
I consulted the paperback edition of “dictionnaire étymologique des noms de famille et prénoms de France,” by Albert Dauzat, c1980 & 1987. Page 522 has a main entry for the surname RIPPE which includes RIPOTEAU. There are 8 lines of text in French, a language I do not understand.
You decide if RIPOTEAU is akin to RIPPETOE.
