[Facts] Afton?
Does anyone know the meaning of the name Afton? I believe it is Irish. My cousin (a girl) is named Aria Afton Louise, and I was just wondering what you all think it means.~*~*~*Alexandra Rose*~*~*~

As a female given name, Afton is probably not from the place in Ireland, but from the river in Scotland. It seems to have been adopted as a given name in the 19th century under the influence of the Scottish poet Robert Burns' poem. The poem was put to music and was a very popular song in the 19th century.http://www.worldburnsclub.com/poems/translations/441.htmMost experts think Afton (like Avon) is from a ancient Celtic word which just meant "river".

According to http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/english/ins/epncurrent/keytoepn.html, it's a surname, from the place name meaning 'Aeffa's farm/settlement'. Or at least, that's one meaning. There may be other meanings relating to the River Afton in Scotland. It's also been discussed once before http://www.behindthename.com/bb/arcview.php?id=113048&board=gen
