I like it. I also like Mellie as a nickname. But I know way too many. Once even had two in a class. I was born in the late 80s. Also many people have told me they find it trashy. It also makes me think of the Gone With the Wind character who was a little annoying.

I can't for the life of me understand how Melanie is trashy. I'm really surprised that many people have told you that. Makes me wonder about the taste of the general public. On the other hand, like you, my husband found the GWTW character annoying. I'm sure she was not meant by the author to come off that way at all, and I'm equally sure it's a minority opinion, so worth noting.

Hmm I have no idea. I've heard people say that a lot. I have also known many girls named Melanie which is weird. I mean it was in the top 100 for a long time (still is) but always near the bottom. Maybe because of Melanie Griffith? She was beautiful but doesn't look too classy at the moment. I think she also had a drinking problem. She's the only celeb with the name I can think of. I can understand why people think of it as trashy, it doesn't have a classic feel to it, so I wouldn't judge a person as having bad taste in names simply because he thinks Melanie is trashy. It's not trendy either, though. She was annoying because she was sacrificing herself in a way no human being should, in my opinion. It's not that I hated her, I was actually fond of her in a way, but thought she was annoying at the same time :P One of the Melanies in my class was very sweet and hard working so I try to associate it with her. Sometimes it works and I kind of like the name and sometimes the image of all the others I know (none of them pleasant) is too strong.

I have to admit, the existence of Melanie Griffith totally slipped my mind, and, yes, I can see her as trashy. So that could explain it. It's a shame, though, that a celebrity can ruin the image of a name. My husband never read GWTW, only saw the movie, and only at my insistence. I can remember that during the movie, he snorted in disbelief and disgust during the childbirth scene, when Melanie says something along the lines of "Oh, Scarlett, I'm sorry to be so much trouble to you. You'd be home with your mother if it weren't for me" and this while she's in the throes of labor. And on the way home, he said she was too much of a goody-goody. So you're not the only one! This has gotten OT, but I kind of like when that happens. :-D

Melanie Wilkes from GWTW is why I made this post so it's not too far off topic, haha. I'm currently reading the book, but I'm only halfway through so no spoilers please!

I always thought Melanie in GWTW was annoying. It seemed like she was deliberately written that way to me!

... also.I think if we meet people named a certain name, we tend to think of that name in that context, so if there were a lot of Melanies born in the 80s & 90s, the chances are that someone knew a Melanie that they weren't so fond of. This has happened with several names for me, unfortunately.

I really like Melanie. It's simple yet stunning in its own way, like Melanie Wilkes from "Gone With the Wind."

I've always thought it is a very pretty and surprisingly underused name, and would make a good choice for any newborn.
